To protect citizens’ data and prevent identity fraud, the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has said it would subject all licensed verification agents, front-end partners, and Diaspora partners to rigorous security vetting.
NIMC Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said in a statement on Saturday that the move was part of the commission’s commitment to providing secure identity services and upholding global best practices in identity management.
The NIMC DG said the vetting process is designed to ensure that all agents and partners comply with regulatory requirements, mitigate insider threats, and prevent unauthorised access to the National Identity Database.
The commission warned that any partners found violating the new security protocols will face sanctions in accordance with established regulations and national laws.
NIMC also revealed that law enforcement authorities have been authorized to crack down on individuals involved in online smishing schemes targeting citizens’ data.
